1:

The Brief

British design duo Zowie Broach and Brian Kirkby launched Boudicca couture fashion  in 1997, creating avant-garde and experimental designs. To express the nature of their brand, Boudicca wanted a film that could express their design style while encompassing many alternative platforms, such as installation pieces, viral emails, website home page, etc.

The Concept

Producers Typhoon CP came up with the idea to create the effect of a dress being constructed round a bare mannequin. They set out to present the dress as simply growing and evolving with folds, strands, creepers and swirls of the ‘dress’ being enhanced with 3D CGI.

Production

Live action sequences were shot by Director Ben Bannister using a motion control rig, a unique system with a circular dolly track. This enabled control of the animation transition in edit. It also enabled the speed dynamics and duration of the film to be lengthened and shortened to accommodate the various media platforms that Boudicca has planned.

Post Production

On completion of the filming, all of the various passes (upwards of 50 separate takes) were composited together at UNIT. using ‘Nuke’. Time was taken to embellish the final product, with particular focus on the pace and feel of the dress’ creation. Utilising the 3D departments Maya and Tracking software PFTrack, CG animation was created for the final section, giving the effect of a continuation in the build of the dress.

Boudicca

UNIT has just completed the post production on a creative film for couture fashion label Boudicca. It will be used across all digital platforms to showcase their brand and distinctive design style.

Produced by Typhoon CP, the film artistically presents the construction of a dress around a bare mannequin. Live action sequences were shot using a unique motion control rig, and UNIT composited the footage before applying visual effects to embellish the finished product.
