Recent Work - 2007
UNIT’s in Fashion
Setting trends is our strong point, so when we were asked to work on a project for French fashion house Hermes shot by iconic fashion photographer Corinne Day, we jumped at the chance. Matt Chodan edited the short, which is being shown throughout their high street stores.
Paranormal Activity
UNIT has completed sound design on 37 idents for US channel A&E’s spooky series ‘Paranormal State’. UNIT created all sound design on the spots in our new 5.1 audio facility, run by Head of Audio Kim Storey. Kim is currently working on and overseeing two Documentary series, some animation sound design and is soon to begin a 5.1 feature mix.
Better Believe It
Sky has asked UNIT and agency Brothers and Sisters to create more spots in our "Sky HD - Believe in Better" commercials campaign. Charlie Cassidy and agency Producer Ros Parr completed this Sky Sports spot in time for the Xmas rush and the next spot is already in pre-production. The campaign has been entered for a number of awards.
Brand Spanking
UNIT's corporate and brand film work just keeps on growing and December was no exception. Many clients choose UNIT for our ability to take in FCP projects that have been started in-house and others like the fact they can work at full resolution throughout the project. How we did it
UNIT's Chart Show
UNIT continues to attract a massive range of music related clientèle: be it commercial; DVD; promo, or broadcast work. November's offerings include Mcfly (TVC), Mutya Buena, Chemical Brothers, Amy Studt, Hoosiers (all promos) and James Blunt (doc).
More Funny Business...
UNIT has just completed final post on a new observational doc series for the BBC. 'More Funny Business' follows the adventures of contestants in an amateur stand up comedy show. Matt Ashton took care of Online and Grade, with Kim Storey having the last laugh in audio.
Viral work spreads
Web and Mobile projects were the talk of the month with some great viral work for Nokia, Epson Printers, Innocent and Ford along with a number of corporate projects including Sainsbury's, Aston Martin and Toyota. Our VFX team also worked on some graphic mobile content for a new under wraps ITV project.
Collecting Commercials
Through 2007 UNIT has been working on an ongoing series of commercials for Eaglemoss Publishing. Our shared storage setup allows for maximum flexibility for projects like these, with the editing taking place in one suite, and VFX taking place in another. Editors Nick Evans and Sebastian Ratcliffe took care of the cutting, with Roland Woolner and Charlie Cassidy bringing the spots to life in After Effects and Shake.
How we did it
Try and Try Again
Executing the idea of Brothers and Sisters’ creative Ros Parr, UNIT’s VFX artist Charlie Cassidy created the feeling of being inside the action by manipulating a selection of hi-res stills in After Effects. Sky aired the 45” spot at half time on ITV during England’s Rugby World Cup semi-final game against France.
Cutting Commercials
UNIT’s roster of Commercials Offline editors have ensured that our short form work continues to grow. October spots include Volkswagen, Sky Sports, 888.Com, HSE and Maxfactor. With the ability to edit at full resolution throughout, you can roll straight into Grade, VFX and Audio – or send directly to TV. Tapelessly. Reels and links are available on request.
Serious Series
Autumn has seen UNIT working on a bucket load of documentary series for channels including Sky One, ITV, National Geographic and Bravo. Production companies are continuing to book UNIT for the entire process – Edit, Grade, Audio and Graphics. We have specialist departments with specialist ops available for each part of the post- production process. Just ask.
Bar UNIT
UNIT is pleased to announce that we have finally opened our new building. The two sites have been knocked together and are attached by way of a spacious, fully licensed bar and large meeting room, that lead to our new MCR, 5.1 audio facility and further offline, online and grading suites. Come and check it out!
We're lovin' it...
Our friends at One Small Step helped add to UNIT’s ever growing commercials work quota and helped us to our busiest month yet. You may have seen these brilliant McDonalds ads on TV already. If you haven’t, look out for them. The four spots were directed by Steven Tsuchida and edited in UNIT’s suite 3 by Lorrin Braddick.
Down to Business
UNIT was rubbing shoulders with the big cats last month, with this impressive corporate for Puma by VFX Artist Charlie Cassidy. Other corporate projects posted through September include Ford Financial, RAC, KPMG, Sky, Land Rover and Toyota to name but a few.
Heavenly Sword
UNIT recently completed 5 x making of shorts for the long awaited epic Sony game 'Heavenly Sword', out now. Shot on DVCPRO HD and HDCAM, the films combined clips from the game with insights into the complex graphics techniques and interviews with the actors. UNIT worked on the offline, online and grading. Once complete, UNIT also reversioned the films into 11 languages with international V/O and subtitles.
Toyota's Tree of Life...
UNIT’s head of VFX Roland Woolner (pictured above left) created these stunning Toyota sponsorship titles that open and close ‘Green Design’, a pan European TV series that looks at examples of innovative design technology that aim to harness the powers of nature.
How we did it
A1GP
Unit’s busy VFX department continues to grow, with a huge assortment of work currently booked in. August saw the completion of our A1GP 3D and graphics project with VFX artist Charlie Cassidy creating a number of track maps, wipes and VT slates for the 2007 / 2008 season.
The Restaurant
Top chef and restaurateur Raymond Blanc puts nine couples through their paces to see if they have what it takes to run their own restaurant in a brand new television event for 2007 for BBC TWO. Editor Dominic Leung created this promo in UNIT’s Suite 6.
Virgin and Vaughan
UNIT’s penchant for creative short-form work continues, with this 45 second spot for Virgin Atlantic featuring Johnny Vaughan. Commercials editing legend Rick Waller took care of the creative cutting in UNIT’s Suite 9, Charlie Cassidy worked on VFX, with Alan Bishop grading in Color Suite 1.
Mazda2 Launch
Agency Syzygy and Production company Commercials Unlimited called on UNIT for one of our most adventurous projects yet. The brief for the launch of the Mazda2 was complex and detailed to say the least, with a 3 minute interactive, VFX heavy viral proposed.
3 minute wonders ... again!
Back in the beginning, UNIT edited ‘The Busker Symphonies’ for Channel 4’s 3 Minute Wonder series, and almost one year on we undertook our second series of 3 Minute Wonders, this time entitled ‘If This Bed Could Talk’ by Director Roger Miller. These shorts were very well received and even made it into the ‘Must See’ section of The Independent. UNIT completed the online and grade for all four shorts.
Commercials at UNIT
UNIT regular Dominic Leung had a lengthy stay through July in UNIT’s Suite 9, offlining the latest spot for Max Factor. UNIT now has a roster of offline commercials editors that we can call on for your project, each with an available link or reel to reassure you that they are right for your job. Add to that our grading suites and large VFX department, and you have the perfect place to post your commercial.
Red Bull for ITV
F1 Red Bull Fan Car follows the journey of the Fan Cars: two Formula 1 cars, which have shed their usual array of advertising to be covered with the faces of 30,000 fans. They were driven round Silverstone by David Coulthard and Mark Webber at the British Grand Prix, raising $1 million for spinal injury charity Wings For Life. Lorrin Braddick was the offliner and Tim Greifenberg sorted the online and grade. The documentary aired on ITV through July.
The Pope Visits
Tim Pope is a living legend, having directed Promos for David Bowie, Neil Young, Iggy Pop, The Cure and many more. So it was our absolute pleasure to work with Mr Pope on this new promo for Reverend and the Makers, and what a wonderful, crazy piece of work it is. Tim talked us through his vision over a number of meetings and after you see it, you’ll see why it was important we got it right.
UNIT gives Red Bull Wings
From promos to features, corporates to commercials, UNIT's specialist departments work on the most diverse and unique of projects week in and week out, and the latest Red Bull promotional films were no exception. Tim Griefenberg edited the films, which will be delivered onto branded USB keys and dished out as part of a country-wide promotion.
The UNIT Effect
Through June, we sprayed a healthy dose of Lynx through our building, working on 'Lynx Presents the Bom Chicka Wah Wah Rally' for MTV and TMF - a one hour documentary hosted by Kelly Brook. Our client brought us all the required HD media on hard disk, and we worked tirelessly across three suites to meet the tight deadline. Offline, online, grade, graphics and audio were all taken care of here at UNIT.
Madonna
We try not to get star-struck here at UNIT. From day one, our discreet, comfortable suites have been home to some of the biggest names in the music industry: from Kasabian to Yusuf Islam. That all went out of the window when Madonna, the Queen of Pop, graced us with her presence for a two-month long edit...
UNIT's life of Luxury
UNIT are thrilled to announce that we have embarked on the 39-parter for 'Inside Luxury Travel with Varun Sharma'. All shot at full 1080 HD, we're working the UNIT way - at online resolution throughout - and will be delivering PAL, NTSC and HD masters. Post starts in earnest later in July, but our VFX boys have been hard at work on the title sequence for series one and two. Well done, it's 5 star!!
