HSBC’s Rugby Sevens Campaign for Saatchi & Saatchi

Soho based creative facility UNIT recently delivered the VFX on both the 60” online film and the various 30” stadium films for the globally renowned HSBC sponsored Rugby Sevens Series.

The campaign created by Saatchi & Saatchi’s Creative Director Mark Slack and directed by Outsider’s Jim Gilchrist, follows ‘The Journey’ of the HSBC rugby ball as it travels to every nation involved in the HSBC Rugby Sevens tournament.

To date the films have rolled out in stadiums as far and wide as Dubai, Cape Town, Wellington, Sydney, Las Vegas and most recently Vancouver.  Hong Kong is next in line going live imminently between 79th April and Singapore, Paris and London set to follow after on the Series calendar.

On collaborating on the project UNIT’s Senior VFX Artist Alec Eves comments, “Helping tell the story of the ball travelling through the numerous countries where the Rugby Sevens is taking place was the main challenge with the film. All the footage was shot in one country, so it was down to us to really enhance the journey of the ball across the continents. As well as making the flight of the ball feel as seamless as possible between the different environments it bounced through, it was necessary to help make it as obvious as possible as to which country we were now in, by adding extra elements or removing others. I was really pleased with how well it all came together”.
